WHy calculus?
This paper talks about how students always seem to wonder how mathematics applies to the real world. It argues that this can be asked about any subject, not just math. The author mentions how they practice the belief of learning for the sake of knowledge, rather than questioning why they are learning something. They go on to say that math contains inherent beauty and require constant focus from the student. The paper is concluded by discussing the idea of math consisting of multiple building blocks, with calculus acting as the final one at High Tech High. A student must be motivated and willing to learn in order to find success with mathematics.
This perspective got me thinking about how I have argued in the past that mathematics does not have an application in the real world and it has somewhat changed my my mind about the matter. Although basic math is often all that is needed by most people, learning some of the more advanced mathematic skills will benefit one's overall knowledge. I agree with the writer of this paper about how students must find internal motivation in order to really get everything possible out of learning mathematics. I anticipate having to put this into practice this semester, due to how much content will be coming my way. I will strive to be consistently motivated throughout the semester in order to get the most out of the class.
