The first product that I worked on for my internship was this video for the Escondido Street Faire. I went out to the event and filmed for my first day of interning. I spent the next couple of days editing the footage into this video, intended to promote the event. This was a great experience for me to be able to take on a project like this and have the freedom to be creative with it. My mentor and I were very pleased with how this turned out.
The second, and more time consuming project that I worked on for my internship was creating the program for the Annual Installation and Awards Dinner. I had never worked with the program Adobe InDesign prior to creating this product, but because I am a very fast learner, I was able to quickly understand how to utilize all of the program's features to create a product that truly pleased my mentor.
There are several reasons why this internship project was important. The first being the experience that I got out of working as an intern and having the opportunity to put some of my skills to the test in creating final products such as these. I have also been a real benefit to my mentor in my time as an intern, which is something that is very important for an intern to be able to do. The project that I did allowed my mentor to focus her attention onto other areas due to the fact that she did not have to worry about creating the program. My efficiency as an intern has proven to be very important, and I think that this really made me stand out from interns they have had in the past.
A new appreciation that I developed while working as an intern was the fact that it is such a great place to put the skills that I learned at school into practice. Having an internship on my resume will be a major factor that will set me apart from the majority of post-highschool students. I have also really learned to appreciate all of the work that the Chamber of Commerce does to promote businesses in the community.
Some qualities that i've seen in the people around me, mainly in my mentor, have been dedication and perseverance in the task at hand and really working hard to get things done. I hope that I that I can really develop these skills myself in the future because I know how important it is to have these skills. I am also looking forward to developing my networking skills, which is another thing that my mentor is very good at doing. The benefits of having networking skills are endless and I have seen how important that is over the course of my internship.
An important skill for any employee to have is the ability to measure their success. As an intern at the Escondido Chamber of Commerce, the primary method that I used to measure my success was to evaluate the quality of my deliverables. I made sure that I didn't ask my mentor for their opinion on my work until I felt that the work I produced was at a high enough standard. Once the product I created was at this point, I would then reach out to my mentor to seek her approval on my work. What I learned from this was that you should first thoroughly review your work and assess whether you have produced a high quality product.
I believe that I have made a meaningful contribution to the workplace by bringing my knowledge and experience with multimedia to the table and by helping the chamber gain more exposure. The work that I did as an intern would otherwise had to of been done by my mentor, which would have been a lot of work for her on top of what she already has. I'd like to think that I have really benefited the chamber during my time as an intern and i'm so grateful to have been a part of their team.
My work as an intern has been very meaningful to my education because I have learned what it's like to be out in the workplace and I have gained a considerable amount of experience through this. This internship has been my first time putting some of the skills that I learned in school into action in a professional environment.
This internship has solidified the college path that I have been considering taking, which is to major in Business Administration. I have had the opportunity to better understand business and what it takes to run one. The Chamber of Commerce plays such an important role in promoting local businesses, and I have been able to see the effect it has on these businesses first hand. After speaking with different business owners and seeing how passionate they are about what they do, I know that I my career will have to do with business and entrepreneurship.
I have also realized through this internship that I want to give back to the community and promote the idea of supporting small/local businesses. So far I have already had my first encounter with this, as the first part of my internship project was to create a video promoting several local businesses, of which were vendors at the Escondido Street Fair. I'm very excited for the future and to see where this internship takes me.
So far during my internship, I have demonstrated the important skill of self advocacy in many ways. Whenever I have been confused with something, I first make sure that it's something I can't figure out myself and then I ask my mentor for assistance. I have not had any issues with asking for support, mainly because my mentor is open to providing me with guidance over the course of this internship. The reason why I make sure that I can't figure out the solution first is because I do not want to be that intern that constantly asks for help with whatever they are working on because this causes your mentor to not be able to get their work done. I think that i've been doing a really good job as an intern overall. I always make sure that i'm always busy working on something and that i'm putting my full effort into everything that i'm working on.
Over the course of my internship, I plan on working on numerous media related tasks such as creating videos and brochures. I will be making a video for an event that was put on by The Escondido Chamber of Commerce called The Grand Avenue Street Festival. Once this is completed, I will be creating a website for the event and uploading the video content in addition to information about the event. I will also be assisting in the planning of their Annual Installation and Awards Dinner that will take place on June 13.
The skills that I will need in order for this project to be successful include videography/editing skills, communication skills, and attention to detail. I believe that I possess these skills and have the ability to successfully complete this project. My mentor is very supportive and should be able to provide me with any support needed. I am really looking forward to putting my skills to use and creating a solid project at my internship.
I have only been interning for three days now and I am enjoying it very much! These are my thoughts thus far...
One thing that i'm curious about concerning this internship is how I can improve as an intern. I want to know what the steps are that I need to take in order to be an intern or employee in the future.
Some connections that I can make between my internship and what i've done in school have to do with communication skills, such as writing done in humanities as well as projects that involved doing group work.
I have learned that The Escondido Chamber of Commerce is a very important part of the community. It is responsible for improving the local economy and promoting commerce and community.
So far I have been developing my communication skills and professionalism, two very important skills for this type of internship. I would like to continue developing these skills so that I can succeed in this internship and be able to use these skills in the future.
